Dear of Class of 1978
The nice people at the Arcadia High School Alumni Association have asked me to encourage all of you to attend our thirty year reunion the weekend of October 10-12, 2008, and I am more than happy to comply.
While we haven‘t formalized the itinerary yet, we hope to make it a weekend event with music and dinner at Santa Anita race track Saturday the 11th, with a burrito run the night before at Taco Lita on Friday Night, a trip to the arboretum Saturday, and a day at the races on Sunday. If someone still has kin living in Arcadia or rents a hospitality suite at an Arcadia hotel, it might be nice to post some open house schedules as well. It’s very rough at this point, but thanks to Carolyn Hassett Tober of the Alumni Association, we already have Santa Anita reserved Saturday night for the main event.
Even though it is our hometown, and everyone loves their hometown (theoretically at least), I’ve always thought Arcadia was a magic place. When my mom walked me through the Arboretum as a kid, the site of the adobe and the Queen Anne cottage gave me the sense that Arcadia was more than just a suburb; it was Old California, ancient in its own way. It was once the sprawling, wild Rancho Santa Anita. When my older brothers rode their horses up past Foothill Blvd and on to Chantry flats, or when my sisters stood in line at the Arcadia Music Mart to go to a Beatles Concert at the Hollywood Bowl, or when the lights went up on the football stands at Arcadia High School, or when my dad taught us the evils of gambling by winning an Exacta for us as ten year olds—well, you get the picture. It was a sweet place to grow up. I’m looking forward to trading memories with all of you. My wife and I now raise six children on a farm in Oak Glen, http://www.rileysfarm.com/arcadia_rileys.htm and the 2nd weekend of October is our busiest of the year. So if we can make it, you can make it! That’s an order!
